One of the most important decisions a grower needs to make is what varieties to grow, as the selections you make are an investment decision that need to be viable for the next four years. What you need to consider in your selection process are things like colour, production, flower size, stem quality, disease resistance and vase life. In the previous issue of the Australian Flower Industry magazine, I wrote in some detail about the importance of vase life as part of the selection criteria. Other important factors in your selection are dependent upon climate, structure, experience and market. What I intend to cover here is a guide for new and existing growers as to some of the latest trends in varieties currently available.
