The use of coir as a growing medium has increased throughout the nursery and cut flower industries. This is largely because of its affordability, its sustainability and its favourable physical characteristics. However, there has been discussion around the effects of different coir on plants as a result of questions regarding the low quality (saline) water used for washing the products during processing. It is suggested that coir substrates that have been pre-treated with beneficial nutrients are a superior growing media.
