New Product Development Research Officer Crops, Forestry & Horticulture Division DPIFM NT – Tropical gingers are known for their showy and unusual colours and forms. There are a number of ornamental gingers that are cultivated for their flowers, and one of the most popular ones is the genus Zingiber or more commonly known commercially as the Beehive ginger.
In 1999, the Northern Territory Department of Primary Industry, Fisheries and Mines (DPIFM) commenced a Zingiber breeding project to develop new cut-flower varieties. This followed the local cut flower industry group identifying this genus as worthy of further development.
