Last year in a letter to AFI’s editor, Plant Breeder’s Rights advocate, Christopher Prescott touched on the important changes needed to assist Australian plant breeder’s right (PBRs) holders effectively enforce their valid rights.

Christopher has explained to AFI readers the importance for breeders to have the ability to protect the new cultivars that they produce.

Plant breeders require a ‘real’ incentive to create the varieties that we all use in our industry and PBRs give a breeder the framework to have the legal protection on their innovation.

If there is no innovation or incentives the industry will not move forward, however, as with all intellectual property rights, the laws are only as good as the ability to enforce them.
