Those involved in floriculture deal with a great diversity of plants. This impressive number of plants goes hand in hand with a large number of plant names to learn and use correctly. To make matters even more complicated, each plant is associated with multiple name types: a common name, a scientific name, and possibly a cultivar or variety name.At first glance, it may seem that the often lengthy scientific name is unnecessary, or that its use should be reserved for the halls of a university. However, there are good reasons why floriculture professionals should strive to know and use the scientific names of the flower products that they grow, market or sell.
