The first step in the assessment process was to determine the efficiency of the pump. This was  achieved by conducting a pump assessment where operating pressure, flow rates and electricity consumption were measured. During this assessment, recirculation cavitation noise was  apparent, and from the measurements taken, the pump curve indicated the system was capable of pumping a much greater volume of water at its best efficiency point (BEP). The major limitation in achieving flows in this system near the BEP was the small size of the main irrigation lines carrying the water to the growing area.
