| Stenanthemum Growers Manual |
Stenanthemum scortechenii (Syn Cryptandra scortechenii)
Stenanthemum is a woody shrub reaching 1.5 to 2 metres height. It is native to New England Tableland in northern New South Wales and the Granite Belt in southern Queensland. A variety for cut flower was patented in 1987 (No. 623534) as Corroboree Flower and it is marketed and exported as Corroboree Flower/Bush, Cotton Bush or Snowballs. A landscape variety was granted PBR protection in 1992 and is marketed as “White Mischief”. Stenanthemum is completely resistant to frost damage and is relatively free of serious pest and disease problems. However, it is sensitive even to moderately low levels of phosphorus in the soil.

| National
Industry Peak Body |
"A Fresh Start… For the Australian
traditional cut flower industry" –
an Industry Position Paper on the formation of
a National Peak Body, November 2006 by Dr
Alison Fuss (prepared for FAQI).
Executive Summary: In response to the momentum within the industry
generated by the Flowers 2006 – The Australian
Flower Conference and the positive feedback for
the need for a National Peak Body to represent
flower growers, the Flower Association of Queensland
Inc identified a need to bring together representatives
from across the industry in a facilitated meeting
to discuss and document the formation of a National
Peak Body for the Australian Traditional Cut Flower
Industry.
With over 46 participants at the meeting, there
were industry representatives from all States
and Territories and across all sectors of the
industry, including growers, allied industries,
marketing, education and training, as well as
government. Representatives from Horticulture
Australia Limited and the Federal Government’s
Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
made presentations to the meeting.
The key outcomes of the meeting held in Sydney
on 21st November 2006, were the strong support
to move forward on establishment of a National
Peak Body for the Australian traditional cut flower
industry, and the subsequent formation of a Steering
Committee to initiate and foster the process as
outlined in an action plan. ......

Body Meeting Report here. |

| Rose
Seminar - February 2008 |
Rose growers from
as far away as Victoria and NSW travelled to the
farm of Doug Randall at Floranda Flowers, Toowoomba, Queensland,
to hear the latest advice on the cultivation of
roses and gerberas including growth, climate, fertilization,
water and crop protection from the
internationally acclaimed Horticultural Consultant,
Mr Herman Heijkelb from Greenhouse Constructions, The Netherlands.
Mr Heijkelb specialises in roses, orchids
and cut anthuriums and travels the world offering
valuable consultancy and business economic advice
to growers. FAQI were fortunate in finding a gap
in Mr Heijkelb's Australia/New Zealand
schedule and invited him to Queensland to run a
workshop in February.

| Native
Flower Seminar - June 2008 |
| The Conference Centre at Gympie, earlier
this year hosted the 2008 Native Flower Seminar
“Solutions for a Better Future”.
Another very successful seminar was held at Gympie on the 13/14th June with record attendances this year. Thanks to our sponsors for supporting the event: The Australian Flower Industry magazine, DPI&F, NRW, ICT and Organic Crop Protectants. The objective of the seminar was to discuss new products, production technologies, water efficiencies, export opportunities and current research. While there is always room for improvement the feedback suggests that the 2008 seminar was a huge success.
Dr Audrey Gerber from Victoria kindly accepted our invitation to be the key note speaker, and in her inimitable style, with secateurs in hand, lived up to her reputation as the ‘master’ in the industry.
The program included presentations on soil and
leaf test analysis; soil health; establishing your
plants; IPM; cooperative marketing; irrigation
planning and design; irrigation monitoring and
fertigation. The seminar provided growers the
opportunity to speak with a number of technical
experts, allied traders and input suppliers about
the latest technologies and products available. Read more in the June edition of the E-Bulletin.
